PART 2:
Even after twenty-five years, I recognized Greg instantly. He had lost most of his hair and gained a thick waistline, but he still walked with that same overbearing, chest-puffed strut. Trailing a few steps behind him was a much younger woman. She looked to be in her early thirties, heavily pregnant, and utterly exhausted as she tried to balance a heavy designer diaper bag on her shoulder.
Greg walked to the reception desk, loudly gave his name, and turned around to survey the room. That was when his eyes locked onto mine.
I saw the flash of recognition, followed immediately by a cruel, hungry spark. He didn’t just walk over to me; he marched. He grabbed the young woman by her elbow and pulled her along with him, abandoning any sense of common courtesy.
“Well, well. Eleanor,” Greg said loudly, his voice cutting through the quiet waiting room. Several people turned to look.
Before I could even offer a polite, dismissive greeting, he shoved the exhausted younger woman forward. “THIS IS LIZA, MY WIFE!” he announced, practically shouting. “WE’RE EXPECTING OUR THIRD!”
Liza offered a weak, embarrassed smile, but Greg wasn’t looking at her. He was staring intensely at me. He looked absolutely thrilled, his eyes practically screaming that he wanted to break me with this news. He wanted to reopen a thirty-year-old wound right there in public.
“My new wife already gave me two kids,” Greg sneered, his voice dripping with condescension. “Something you couldn’t do for ten years.” He paused, looking around the maternity clinic, before delivering his final blow. “So, what are you doing here? You finally decided to check yourself?”
PART 3:
The sheer audacity of the insult hung heavy in the air. The woman sitting in the row across from us actually gasped. Liza stared at her shoes, her cheeks burning bright red in humiliation.
Before I could even process the anger bubbling in my chest, a tall, distinguished figure stepped up right beside my chair. It was David. He handed me a cold paper cup of water, placed a warm, protective hand on my shoulder, and looked at the strange, red-faced man looming over me.
“Honey, who is this?” David asked, his voice calm, deep, and entirely unbothered.
Greg puffed out his chest, aggressively squaring his shoulders to assert his dominance over my new husband. But as I looked at Greg—this bitter, aging man desperately trying to hurt me—I didn’t feel broken. I felt a deep, serene calm wash over my entire body. I smiled, knowing exactly what my next words would do to him.
“David,” I said smoothly, standing up and looping my arm comfortably through my husband’s. “Here’s my ex, Greg, and his new wife, Liza.”
I turned my attention back to Greg, maintaining a polite, warm, absolutely unshakeable smile.
“And Greg, to answer your question… I’m not a patient today,” I said, my voice carrying clearly across the quiet room. “David and I are just waiting for our twenty-eight-year-old daughter, Chloe, to finish her ultrasound. We’re going to be grandparents.”
I paused, holding his gaze as I delivered the final, crushing truth. “She’s the oldest of our four kids, by the way.”
ENDING:
Greg completely froze. The arrogant, gloating smirk vanished from his face as if it had been wiped away by a physical blow.
For nearly thirty years, he had convinced himself—and everyone who would listen—that I was the broken one. But as he did the quick mental math, the devastating reality crashed down on him. I had gotten pregnant almost immediately after leaving our miserable marriage, and had gone on to easily have four healthy children with a man who actually loved me.
The implication was impossible for him to ignore: the problem during our ten-year marriage hadn’t been me. It had been him.
All the bravado drained out of Greg’s body. His shoulders slumped, and he suddenly looked incredibly small, like a lost, reprimanded child. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. Beside him, Liza slowly looked up at her husband, a profound realization dawning in her exhausted eyes.
Just then, a nurse stepped out into the hallway and called out, “Eleanor? David? Chloe is ready for you to come see the baby on the monitor!”
“That’s us,” David said cheerfully. He gave Greg a polite, dismissive nod. “Take care, man.”
David and I walked down the hallway together, leaving Greg standing completely paralyzed in the middle of the waiting room. I didn’t look back. Sometimes, the most powerful revenge in the world isn’t screaming or fighting back. It’s simply stepping into the light, living a beautifully happy life, and letting the absolute truth speak for itself.
